Spousal support is regularly singled out as the single greatest reason for the failure of international assignments. Time and again, surveys reveal that it is not language differences, cost of living allowances or cultural issues which cause the greatest problems but the ability for an employee’s partner to feel comfortable, at home and supportive in his or her new surroundings.

Employers have long been aware of this fact but even when budgets are available, it is not easy to know how to address the problem. Some major employers have established dedicated departments with significant levels of manpower to try and ease the problem. This is not, of course, due to their philanthropic approach to management but quite simply to ensure that their investment in the expatriate is returned to the full.

To help alleviate the problem for its clients in Belgium, ABC Relocation has launched , designed to be an interactive support group for partners of expatriates to meet, share their problems and enjoy each other’s company. The aim is to create a forum where they can raise any concerns without fear of prejudicing their partner’s position or feeling uneasy and also help others with the benefit of their own experiences.
